Saree Care 101: How to Wash, Store, and Maintain Your Precious Silks

A pure silk saree is not just a piece of clothing; it is an investment, an heirloom passed down from mothers to daughters. However, handloom fabrics require deliberate care to retain their luster, strength, and vibrant colors. Here is a definitive guide on how to make your Ilanji Sarees last a lifetime.

1. The Golden Rule of Storage

Never store your silk sarees on cheap plastic or metal hangers, as they can cause creases and rust stains. Instead, wrap each saree individually in a clean, breathable white cotton or muslin cloth. This allows the natural fibers to breathe and prevents moisture buildup.

2. The Art of Re-folding

If a silk saree sits in the cupboard in the exact same position for months, the fabric can tear along the fold lines. Take your sarees out every 3 to 4 months, unfold them completely, let them air out in a shaded room for a few hours, and refold them in the opposite direction.

3. Tackling Spills and Stains

Accidents happen, especially at weddings! If you spill food or drink on your saree, do not rub it with water—this will spread the stain and ruin the silk's texture. Blot it gently with a dry tissue and take it to a professional dry cleaner as soon as possible.

4. Ironing with Caution

Always iron your silk sarees on the reverse side using a low or medium "silk" setting. Better yet, place a thin cotton cloth over the saree before pressing to act as a heat shield. Never use a water spray, as it can leave permanent water spots on pure silk.

By investing just a little time into maintaining your sarees, you preserve the heritage and hard work of the weavers who crafted them. Happy draping!
